Did you know that G. I. Joe: Retaliation was the inspiration behind the massively successful Deadpool movie? Wait… What!?!
During their interview on Jeff Goldsmith’s podcast The Q&A, Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick (writers of both Retaliation and Deadpool) revealed that executives they were working with on the 2013 G. I. Joe sequel gave them a compulsory note when it came to their story: “London’s Got To Go.”
However, the destruction of London in G.I. Joe: Retaliation wasn’t all for naught, as it did inspire Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick to shape Deadpool without the typical “save the world” or “ticking clock” tropes. Instead, they went with an old classic that’s been left to gather dust and age: the hero’s quest to save his future baby mama. In fact, Fox was not only ok with the film tackling more of a romantic motivation, they were also fine without forcing Reese and Wernick to “raise the stakes,” thus repeating the unnecessary loss of life in their comic book movie. To be completely honest, Deadpool was better off with the path that it took.

People harp the shit out of those films but I still love ROC and Retaliation. There campy to the max, and even though both faltered from the source material, they turned out pretty awesome still. I may watch one tonight!

When all else fails... write Deadpool.

The story for Ret. Wasn't that bad, but everything else that makes a movie, a movie was horrible. Editing, dialogue, flow of movie, etc. At least we got some great figures and vehicles out of the movie.

After reading the story it would seem the sum total of inspiration provided by GIJoe Retaliation in the creation of Deadpool was that GIJoe did something one way and they decided not to do something that way in Deadpool.
Fascinating!

I don't know much about Deadpool outside the movie (which I liked), but the character seems like he's a fanboy's wet dream amalgamation of Snake Eyes and Wolverine.

Unless the next GI Joe movie is like Deadpool (meaning good), I don't see why this matters.

I had my hopes up they were going to say they learned that you should give people what they want. I loved that they didn't feel like they needed to reinvent Deadpool or to change up the costume.

Other thing to remember about Deadpool is that Fox did a terrible job bringing him to the big screen the first time around in Wolverine. It was completely not Deadpool, it was some other character by the end of that movie. But, after years and years they listened to someone who understood the character and made a Deadpool movie with Deadpool in it. Not some other movie invented character. Whoever is writing the characters and story line is off for GI Joe. They are just are not getting it and that is the same thing Fox did to Deadpool the first time around.

I still dig both G.I. Joe movies, except for the killing of Cover Girl and Duke. I definitely like them better than all the Transformers movies (even though #3 was pretty amazing).
On that note, even I have to admit: they did Deadpool right.
