According to Latino Review, GI Joe 2 Cobra Strikes may be pushed up from an August 10th 2012 release date, to an earlier summer release date. This is due to Star Trek 2 possibly being pushed back to winter 2012:
Unless the stars and planets align properly, it would be difficult for the writers and Abrams to complete the project in the next thirteen months.“Don’t be surprised if Paramount and Abrams push back six months at least,” wrote Mike Fleming of Deadline.
If that happens, Paramount has an option to move up the “G.I. Joe” sequel to an earlier summer release date next year.
With reports that Cobra Strikes will not be shot in 3D nor post coverted to 3D, perhaps an earlier release is feasible.

I was reading this article over at Latinoreview.com about how Star Trek 2 release date may be pushed back which might open the date for G.I. Joe 2 to be released earlier in the summer. Do ya'll think that would help the movie or kill the franchise if it's moved up to June? Here's the link.News: ?Star Trek 2? Date May Be Pushed Back? | Latino Review

Really, nobody has an opinion on this? Wow!

If it's a great movie or crappy movie, a release date isn't going to affect it.
If it's an ok movie, it'll get obliterated in June. People will go and see the good movies that they didn't see the week prior because they were seeing the other good movies released in late May/June. Then in the following weeks, until school starts up again, people will see the GOOD new releases, catch up on the past good releases, & ignore those movies that recieved poor reviews from friends & critics untill they hit Redbox.

Depends on how well it's marketed and what else is out in that timeframe. Right now next summer is somewhat "thin" compared to this summer (which is absolutely brutal in terms of competition). "Avengers" and "The Dark Knight Rises" are probably the films to beat next summer (especially if Star Trek 2 is out of the picture). The June 29th release date would at least give the appearance of a show of confidence on Paramount's part, and probably would help the film, as it's nicely spaced in between the two prospective "mega blockbusters" and leads it into a holiday weekend (4th of July) that could help make for decent second-weekend grosses (Holiday weekends are usually good for all movies playing at the time).

Maybe it'll help, imho Cobra Strikes does not stand a chance at rivaling Star Trek 2.

I'll tell you what Joe 2 needs to find some weekend where nothing is comeing out that is a threat.
I watched Star Trek Nemesis which really wasn't that bad of a film get crushed under the wheels of Lord of the Rings. And if it had just pushed back release for a month or so it would have done fine.
Timing is very important.

I think it would definitely be a benefit. There is not as much competition in August but there is also a LOT less time to make money. A June slot with the extra two months of summer could pad the gross.

I'd like it to be moved up. That would also mean sequel toys earlier.

good

That's also the traditional 4th of July blockbuster spot. If Paramount likes what they see early in filming and they market the movie the movie right. It could hit big.
