Street Fighter X G.I. Joe #1 hits the shelf tomorrow, and it’s awesome! I will be the first person to admit that I didn’t think this was going to work, but I was wrong. The Street Fighter G.I. Joe line came into effect a long time after I had moved away from toys as a kid. However I was definitely playing Street Fighter II on Super Nintendo with all my teenage friends. I was a huge fan of the game and G.I. Joe but not in the same Universe. Until now that is! The book is action packed, and mixes the two universes together in a more Street Fighter way. Match ups like Snake Eyes vs. Crimson Viper and Baroness vs. Rufus will keep you wanting more. Good news is there is a ton of match ups coming in future books as well as a sub-plot that includes a Macguffin device. IDW nailed this one. Awesome art, awesome covers, and what seems to be a good story to kick things off.

The fist good G.I. Joe book in a long time. They even added new file cards at the back of the book.

Great preview, I'll be picking up this title for sure now.
The artwork ain't bad.
I'll be picking up my copy tomorrow and I ordered a signed copy of the NinjaInk variant cover edition. Been looking forward to this series since last summer I'm sure it'll be as much fun as the Danger Girl crossover.
Wow. Never have I seen a preview turn my opinion 180 degrees before. I don't get the context, one iota (why would Joes enter this thing?), but the action/art/dialogue is all pretty fantastic.
Overall, this looks good. I like the art, the fight is well done, and I love all the characters, so I'll definitely be buying these. I'm not expecting deep character studies here. Street Fighter is all about people beating each other up for no discernible reason, so I'm not terribly concerned with the story.
My one criticism is the line where Crimson Viper is surprised because "Ninjas can't counter Judo." First, the notion that one style of martial art is just completely ineffectual against another is just Hollywood. Second, Judo was descended from Jujitsu, which was itself a school of combat practiced by Sengoku-era Samurai and emphasizes submission locks and throws. If I were a ninja, the FIRST thing I would figure out is how to counter Samurai techniques.
Sounds to me like the writer just needed a line to demonstrate Viper's hubris, and just picked the first martial arts vocabulary word he came across, which is a pretty common occurrence in all comics (GI Joe itself often uses military jargon in a clunky or ham-fisted manner).
I moved my comments on the comic to the discussion thread.
This is the end...my only friend...the end...
