Finally! The long overdue Hasbro Universe comes together under one flag, IDW’s Revolution! Our first taste of the run that will crossover into many Hasbro properties, including M.A.S.K., ROM, Transformers and others was launched at SDCC 2016 with Issue #0. To be honest, the book was kinda vanilla and didn’t open to many eyes they way I would have hoped. However fans of the many lines that showed up in issue #0 seen growing excitement, at that point that’s all that mattered. Fast forward to the eve of Revolution and it’s time to kick off what will hopefully be the future of all these brands and a combined Hasbro Universe….. IDW did not disappoint!
Revolution is well paced front to back. The story has a gritty feel that older fans will appreciate (for G.I. Joe think Resolute, for Transformers think Marvel G2). It also introduces… no wait, unleashes some unfamiliar faces in the form of ROM… (Just Wait For It!) that will keep you wanting to see more of these characters further down the line.
The G.I. Joe teams looks like they have stepped up their game with Veritech styled fighters of Robotech fame (shown in the background) while still keeping the feel of the G.I. Joe team that we all know and love.
So far the Transformers lead by Optimus Prime (a ton of page time rightfully so) are playing defense trying to figure out what has lead the G.I. Joe team to be so aggressive. Real losses are taken on both sides and the tone and pace are set for the book.
The Art is on-point!
I gotta hand it to the people involved with this project so far, they hit the nail on the head with Revolution #1! If they continue to keep the action at the level of the launch book, this will be in the top 3 runs of IDW’s history of working with Hasbro brands. It will give current relevance to older brands that have fell off the radar and bring them up to date with new fans as well as giving us old school fans the stories we always wanted to read with a combined Hasbro Universe! A+ must own book, but I think 19 covers was a little overkill……
