Looks like another Brick and Mortar legacy retailer “Toys R Us” has found themselves on hard times.
“Toys R Us has hired a law firm to help restructure its roughly $400 million in debt due in 2018, a move that could include the marquee toy store filing for bankruptcy protection, sources familiar with the situation said Wednesday.
Addressing the retailer’s debt load prior to the crucial holiday season could give its major vendors such as Mattel and Hasbro clarity into the company’s long-term viability to help ensure the toymakers continue to stock its shelves throughout the holidays.
Toys R Us has hired restructuring lawyers at Kirkland & Ellis to help address the looming payments, the people said.”

Toys R Us, I wish I could help you; but you won't carry any Joes for me to buy. :( And when you do, you discontinue them & sell them to Ross; before I can find them & pay you full retail for them!

At a certain point lets just look at how our own little segment is going. Exclusives at best with limited quantity from major mfgs and then the new way forward is smaller boutique providers who get backing direct from consumers by making, for the most part, what consumers want.
The price point differentiation was, a few years back, about $21 for the boutique new ks backed shops vs $7-8. Now those smaller mfgs are typically coming in around $20-$25 when often lower articulation, lower quality, poor paint app, strange design choice, et al choices from mass mfg are coming in at $15. In other words you once at a 3:1 cost ratio to put your dollars behind a Marauders or a BFS and now that's a 1.5:1 ratio. You tell me which grouping TRU works with and which grouping is providing value per dollar spent at the moment...
And TRU has zero investment in that space. There's not one thing at a TRU that I can't purchase more efficiently from Amazon and have in 2 days at this point in time.
TRU is not immune to overall trends in consumer behavior and that means the TRU 7000 sq ft store has to change from something that is pick and choose off a shelf to something interactive and providing of more value.
Fair disclosure - I've worked for companies led by Dave Brandon - he's a straight shooter and a good man to work for. I hope he's able to establish a new place in the market for TRU that works for the company, the consumer, the mfgs, and the employees. That's a big ask and he's not a stupid guy so fingers crossed they figure it out.

Sad news.

The only reason we go to TRU now is to ride the little Garfield coin-op car and go to the baby doll aisle so I can hear my little 3-year old say to the motion sensor babies, "I'm not your mommy, creepy baby!"

Can't figure out why the big Toys "R" Us at the King of Prussia mall refuses to carry most new NECA product for most of the year. All the little locations further out have gotten the new Predator figures and many other items. I asked this one to check the back and they brought out some Aliens figures that I didn't want, then they put them back where they still sit, unable to be sold. This should be a much easier store to manage than Walmart but they can't do their job any better.

toys are horrible...they bring no joy and and are a waste of money. You should all turn over all of your Gi Joes prodcut to me so that I can relieve you of this burden.
@Toys r Us: It's been a good ride..Tanks for the memories.....

I wish Target or Walgreens would carry Joes, since ROSS doesn't seem to have them anymore either. Ugh.
