Journalist Brian Penny has posted several Cast and Crew interviews from the Japanese Blessings Ceremony of Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins
The interviews feature Henry Golding (Snake Eyes), Iko Uwais (Hard Master), Haruka Abe (Akiko), Stunt Coordinator Kenji Tanigaki, Andrew Koji (Storm Shadow), Takehiro Hira (Kenta), and Director Robert Schwentke.
The director confirms that Yakusa is featured. He has also included a lot of Japanese cultural aspects such as Ninjō (which probably explains the new character Akiko).

It's GI Joe in branding, only, for me, thus far.
How. How do so many missteps happen by companies that have ample reason to have learned better...

I'm on board. I am ready to let go of Hama-verse GIJoe for the movies. We are never going to get it - so why not sit back and hopefully enjoy the ride from this alternate interpretation. We will always have 'our' GIJoe... but dang it, we are pushing 50 years old now. We are not the market for a kiddie action flick. Let someone make a stab at a new version. Maybe it will be great.

Hoping for the best, expecting to be bored, and not super concerned either way, myself.

You could get it, not from a major studio exactly but it is possible.
You could turn to people who make fan films. They want to make the Hama versions of stories but every single fund raiser I have seen for a Joe film have failed. Not all of them are Spielberg quality but they could be darn close with the right backing and funding.
The most recent venture by Paul Gaudiosio failed despite a lot of praise also. You want it? Back it.
If you want a Hama universe film you can have one. You just need to make the effort.
There are plenty of people out here who will make a Hama universe film but a GOOD film will cost some bucks. You have to hire a casting director, actors, a director, a PA, a screenplay writer, storyboarder, SFX, stunt coordinator, props, vehicles, CGI, make up, costume designers, lighting and sound people, craft services, Editors, Grips, all of that and more adds up fast.
It is too bad we don't have a Van Der Beek level fan who would fund such a venture.
