Rafael “Zap” Melendez is one of the original 13 members of the G.I. JOE team. He’s a specialist in armor-piercing and anti-tank weapons, but he also assists the team as a demolitions expert. From his training in Engineering School, Ordnance School, and Advanced Infantry, he’s acquired field skills that he applies with his characteristic coolness under fire and a professional attitude in any situation. He’s participated in many battles against COBRA and uses knowledge gleaned from those missions to pinpoint and attack the evil organization’s weak points. And just to be absolutely sure of the outcome, he backs up every plan with plenty of weapons and explosives.
“The stuff I work on could blow up at any time, so I have to make sure that anytime something explodes, it causes COBRA COMMANDER to have a very bad day.”
The Joe Report Interview With Derryl DePriest
The Joe Report, a newsletter published by the team at Patches of Pride, had a chance to sit down with Mr. Derryl DePriest, Hasbro’s VP of Global Brand Management.
In the article, TJR had the opportunity to do what many of us would love to – Sit down with Mr. DePriest and just talk Joe. In case you didn’t know, Mr. DePriest is not only a “Hasbro Big Wig”, but he’s also a devoted G.I.Joe fan and collector, not to mention the author of “The Collectible GI JOE” which is considered a grail in 12″ G.I.Joe collecting.
The conversation discusses the successes and failures of the 12″ market and how we as collectors helped contribute to both sides of the spectrum. It’s a great read and definitely worth checking out!

Brian Savage Becomes De Facto Leader Of 12-Inch G.I.Joe
The latest issue of The Joe Report, a newsletter published by the team at Patches of Pride, puts to “paper” what has been on the wall for some time now – Hasbro has no intent on keeping the 12-inch line of G.I.Joe alive, but no worries, all hope is not lost!
Brian Savage and The G.I.Joe Collectors Club have announced production of (at least) 4 more officially licensed 12-Inch G.I.Joe Action Figures! The article is very thorough, detailing what lies ahead on the horizon for 12-Inch G.I.Joe collectors and also includes quotes directly from Brian.
Here’s a brief excerpt from the article –
On the Club’s 2 New Upcoming (12-inch) GIjOE Lost Talkers:
“On the 12-inch side…we had started this ‘Lost Talker’ series a few years ago. We did the Talking Action Soldier and the Talking Marine…in the old days, when these were made…around ’67, they only had 8 talking phrases. We found out that in the archive, there were actually 10 recorded by the original voice actors that were not included. What we did with these figures was, we went back…and were able to add all 10 phrases. So not only were they reproduction Talkers as they had been, but they had 2 phrases that had never been heard, not newly recorded phrases, but original, vintage ’60s recorded phrases that were—LOST.”
