G.I. Joe Movie Adaptation #3 Review
The last issue saw Cover Girl stabbed by Zartan. It turns out she’s not the only one. Zartan and Storm Shadow have accompanied The Baroness and have stormed the PIT.
The Baroness is there to make up for her failure to capture the nanomites. Her plan does not go smoothly as the Joes are alerted, and a battle rages within the PIT. It’s cool to see M.A.R.S. in action, invading the PIT, because it shows just how much of a threat they are. The Joes certainly didn’t see them coming, and I think this will be exciting to see onscreen. This is very similar to how Cobra is portrayed in IDW’s comic series.
Duke confronts The Baroness and Storm Shadow confronts Snake Eyes. Storm Shadow greets Snake Eyes with “hello brother”……
Another fight starts as Scarlett enters the fray, this time fighting The Baroness. Here’s where things get weird; Scarlett is drawn with part of her body being transparent. There’s not text indicating why this is, it reminds me of how Shadowcat from the X-Men is drawn when phasing into places. My first guess was that maybe we are seeing a hologram of Scarlett fighting, but if so, how could it even affect The Baroness? The reason I bring this up, is because I’m not really sure what’s going on in these specific panels.
After the skirmish, The Baroness and Storm Shadow return to base where McCullen awaits. Remember how the Eiffel Tower is taken out in the trailers? Here, McCullen explains why he wants the Tower taken out, and we finally learn where the name Destro comes from.
We see a flashback, showing how Storm Shadow and Snake Eyes met at an early age. What I found surprising, and neat, was that the origin is very close to how it’s portrayed in the Classic G.I. Joe comics, especially Snake Eyes’ induction into the Arashikage Clan.
Speaking of flashbacks, we see another, this time showing the death of the Hard Master. A very familiar tragic hero’s sword is shown, embedded into the body of the Hard Master. Remember how in the Classic G.I. Joe comics(like in IDW’s Classic G.I. Joe Vol. 3 released last month), how Storm Shadow had to live a lie to find the truth? Looks like what he is doing in the movie isn’t too far off…
The Joes study the corpse of a Viper Commando, and Scarlett finds out about nanomites in it’s body. An explanation of how nanomites work and how they affect the Vipers is shown as well, which is good because kids might not know about nanomites just yet. This
The Joes track down where The Baroness is headed, and after taking off after her, Duke has a flashback of Rex, her brother. The reasons why Rex perished are revealed, and we can see why Duke has a lot of guilt and regret over it.
We see Storm Shadow make good on his order from McCullen to kill anyone who so much as lays a hand on The Baroness. Afterwards, they leave with their nanomite warheads in the Steel Crusher APV, with Snake Eyes on their trail.
A pursuit in Paris ensues(you can see part of this in the newest TV spots, posted yesterday and today). Ripcord and Duke man up in their accelerator suits briefly, for as they take part in the chase.
While Ripcord misses completely while chasing Storm Shadow, and falls out of a building(which I thought was funny), Duke is able to board the Gunship that Storm Shadow and The Baroness board. What happens next? We’ll see in the final issue…
This issue saw the Joes’ secret base infiltrated and with top secret weapons stolen. The past of the sword brothers is finally revealed, and while we don’t specifically know who killed the Hard Master yet, it’s obvious that it’s still on Storm Shadow’s mind. While his family(and possibly Snake Eyes), thinks he did it, this issue shows that maybe he didn’t kill the Hard Master after all. It almost seems like he has ulterior motives to working for James McCullen. I’ve noticed he plays the part of a mercenary well, just following orders, and nothing more. I bring this up because I think this is an awesome way to pay homage to the origin of Storm Shadow in the Classic G.I. Joe series. I was pleasantly surprised.
This is an important issue in this series because it sheds light on many of the characters. Up until this issue we didn’t know what exactly happened to Rex). We find out why the name Destro was given to McCullen’s great ancestor. We finally find out why the Eiffel tower was taken out in the trailer.
If you wanted to dwelve deeper into the G.I. Joe Rise of Cobra mythos, this issue is for you. It’s definitely the most interesting issue by far. The last issue served as an introduction, this one serves as a family reunion gone wrong; long time rivals clash, and the continuation of long standing rivalries renew explosively. This issue has good background information on the main characters, and leaves good cliffhangers to explain in the next issue. It’s definitely enjoyable and very informative.

Scarlett is wearing a prototype stealth suit. She uses it for part of the fight.

The stealth suit gets a cameo in issue #2 (Ripcord's "what suit?" line when he's admiring the woman testing it!).
Although it makes me sound like a blood thirsty monster, it's really good to see the level of violence going on in the story.
I was worried that we might get some form of sanitized, bloodless version of JOE like the cartoon, but with the graphic (in the comic at least) death of Cover Girl and the Neo Viper suicide in issue #2, I'm reassured that, when it needs to be, the film will have an edge (Though after seeing some of the stuff in THE MUMMY, I shouldn't really have been concerned!).
So I'm lovin' the story so far. Despite what some say, it really does come across as being done in the 'GI JOE style' to me, and if the dialogue is a direct lift from the movie then I think it'll be way better than TRANSFORMERS (1 and 2).
