The GI Joe Collectors’ Club has addressed criticism about the GI Joe Figure Subscription Service(FSS), with a post on Facebook:
There has been a lot of “controversy” over the art for the FSS. Some like it and some HATE it. A lot! :-) We thought it might be fun to show some of the reference the digital artist was given. He was asked to rework them as much original art as possible to make the FSS carded figure art as retro, nostalgic and consistent to each other as could be done in a very tight time frame. We think he did a pretty good job overall. Check out where he began. It looks like A LOT of work to get where he got to starting from these![/i]
So what do you think about the art now?

Ummm, it kind of hurts their cause since many of those images are superior to the reworked card art. For instance, Topside and his infamous thumb - there is no problem on the original art work, nor was anything covering this part to cause the artist to have to rework it. It just looks bad. TNT is another problem: certainly the artist didn't have much to work with, but on the other hand, I'm sure he pulled up images of Blowtorch to fill in the blanks. A talented artist, though, could have reworked that arm to make it look MUCH better. CG was a case of being forced to rework the head to fit the toy, and it looks probably the best of the original work done. What it SEEMS to show is just that the artist was pretty lazy on several of the cards - just photoshopping in the old images - and when the image was incomplete, filling in without any imagination.

Big Boa and Dice and Topside are as expected close to thier predecessor art...the rest...wtf? seriously? Where did that card art come from anyway? That is suposed to be Cover Girl? I never owned any figures with that card art lol..maybe thats the issue at hand with expectations...needless to say it aint much better knowing now where it came form...are those like foriegn cards I guess?

It really isn't Cover Girl. It is card art from one of the cheap Hispanic knock offs. The art was clearly not as good.

Um.. Seeing as these possibly haven't been sint to press, or maybe even proofing yet. Maybe some talented tankers should send the club some actually "fixed" images.

my first impression with this statement is this...
"... digital artist..."
??????????????????????????
Why would you get a DIGITAL artist to recreate hand-drawn art? No wonder it didn't work out. Photoshop is killing the art and design industry like digital cameras are destroying photography. Simply owning photoshop doesn't make you an artist or a photographer!
Lifeline_MD says
I might point out that Topside has no thumb on the original card art either... despite constant whining.
Is the art perfect? No some could be improved, Iron Claw comes to mind instantly, but the amount of complaining about the art is far out of proportion to the actual deficiencies.
Xsoldier says
lol. true they don't. but there are many great "digital" artists. Most pro photographers use photoshop and digital cameras. Or pay someone to photoshop for them.
I don't understand how inovation destroys art? Did moving to acrylics from charcoal, dung, and berries destroy art?
Nope.

Those original images look better than the newer ones.
Cdt Weasel says
So now we blame the source of the art? That TNT card doesn't even show most the art lol.
