Newsarama has posted an interview with Ryan Dunlavey, who has drawn the Real History Of GI Joe variant covers for IDW‘s GI Joe comic this year. Newsarama has also posted the aforementioned covers, so if you’ve missed out, read on as we’ve attached them to this post. The covers stand out as they are basically comic strips as covers.
Here’s how Dunlavey scored the opportunity to draw the covers:
Ryan Dunlavey: Well, before this Fred Van Lente and I did a series of comic books about comic book history that IDW collected under the name Comic Book History Of Comics. That put Fred in touch with IDW to eventually take over the G.I. Joe title, and someone at IDW suggested along the way that he do a history of G.I. Joe in the style of Comic Book history of Comics. During the development of that, somehow I ended up being the one writing and drawing these one-page strips. I don’t know who came up with the idea of doing them as variant covers.
Make sure to look closely at the covers, Dunlavey has drawn a lot of small Easter Eggs in them! The rest of the article can be read at Newsarama.

I noticed on my HOF Flint, he has the backward thumbnail. I had never noticed that before.
The artwork on these 5 covers is excellent. I hope we see more from this artist.

Coming from a vintage to current G.I. Joe fan: excellent. Yet some of the information is a bit...shall we say...simplified, for lack of a harsher word.

Interesting how the 25th anniversary isn't really given much mention which ended up creating an entirely new wave of consumers: nostalgia influenced adult collectors.
It may be an arguable point that adult collectors are what is keeping the current iteration of G.I. Joe alive at retail today...
