You may remember the absolutely amazingly Custom Spaceport Playset Diorama that Hisstank.com forum member Empire a couple of years back…but then again, how could any of us forget? It has always been an awe inspiring piece, causing many an hour to be lost just looking over all the nooks and crannies and living vicariously through the eyes of Empire’s kids.
To quote Hisstank.com forum member Short Bus Kustoms, Empire has moved the bar off of the moon and shot it across the galaxy, into another dimension. Now no one could ever hope to reach this level of awesomeness.
From Empire –
Well, it’s been a long time since I posted an update to the Spaceport. All the ebay playsets and commission pieces have kept me stupid busy but I do occasionally try to squeeze in time to dabble with the “finished” city. I tore out all the original LED strand lighting and replaced it with probably 7 or 8 sets of LED Dioder lights from IKEA. These are perfect as they are plug in so no more replacing batteries and they are bright and super thin at .25″. They actually look like a ceiling light fixture. The Blue Waffle Lounge now has flashing color changing lights to give it a more night club action feel to it. I also added additional wall panels/modules and landing platforms along with more drop towers to the ceiling of the actual room this beast is in. The playset is now officially part of the house. But when you walk into that corner of the room it really does feel like you have entered a miniature city. And yeah, I’m still working on it….

Updated shot:
Here's a Spaceport playset I built for my kids....and myself. While not entirely Joe related, I wanted something with a gritty and overcrowded scifi feel that could act as a sort of offworld truckstop for all 3.75" figure lines to mingle at. I casually started working on it about a year ago and just let it grow building by building. The whole thing is basically 99% wood construction, mostly 5/8" or 3/4" plywood along with various solid wood shapes. For me, foamcore is fine for displays but if I'm putting this much work into something then it's going to damn well be strong enough for a 6 & 9 (or 39) year old to actually PLAY on. Most all of the little doo-dads and detail props are permanently attached so I don't have to worry about a miniature glass of blue alien scotch or a bowl of soup winding up sucked into the vacuum cleaner. The entire Spaceport consists of a bar, a motel, a robo-mart, a gun shop, a diner, a taco stand, a toy store, a medical center, convenience store, a traffic control room, a court/senate chamber, a jail house and a cargo bay along with numerous landing platforms, charging stations, ramps and staircases spread throughout. Most of the buildings have their own separate led lighting also so if you want to play in the bar then you don't have to light up everything else, unless you want to. The entire spaceport is over 6 feet long, 4 feet wide and about 5 feet tall. I'll admit that it's technically still a work in progress, in fact I built and added the street level ice machine last nite, but I'll probably always be adding more to it or around it over the years so it's close enough to "finished" as it is.
Since it's so freakin' big I'll break up the pics into each section views for the posts.
Here's most of the exterior:

This is the best thing anyone on here has ever built, and I've seen a lot of shit here over the years. Words will not do it justice. It is spectacular.

Here's the interior street level view.
Some of these shots are a couple months old where I had posted them on the Rebelscum and Yakface forums.
My cat decided he wanted to get in on the action also and proceeded to eat the face off an Imperial Dignitary "headed" to a meeting....

That dignitary had it coming. Pasty-faced bastard.

Easily one of the best sci-fi hangars I'll ever see. This so cool!
Congrats for the great masterpiece.

Welcome to Hisstank.
That's one hell of a play set you built there.

This is utterly astounding and should be front paged on every toy site there is. Thank you for sharing it.

Here's Mel's Diner (I watched Alice a lot when I was a kid)
I don't know if it's just the physical location of this being on the outside corner of the spaceport but it gets a ton of play from my boys. But all they really do is have Tunnel Rat or Walrus Man sitting there drinking coffee or eating spaghetti.....I dunno, maybe it's like the opening scene of Reservoir Dogs or the diner scene in Spaceballs.
