Transformers and G. I. Joe Comics to the iPad™
“Storefront” applications debut as top downloads on iPad™
Free apps include three free comics each
San Diego, CA (May 17, 2010) – IDW Publishing and Hasbro are proud to announce that TRANSFORMERS Comics and G.I. JOE Comics applications are available now on the Apple iPad. Taking full advantage of the iPad’s full-screen, full-color capabilities, the apps will offer the next level of reading experience to fans. The free IDW iPad storefront apps each include three free comics with the initial download, and offer more comics as in-app purchases. Fans can browse nearly 200 comics for their favorite story lines, such as movie tie-ins, ongoing series or even classics from the 80s.
“The iPad is a wonderful format for comics, as the screen size is close enough to the print size that readers can view the full page. OPTIMUS PRIME and the BARONESS look amazing in this format!” said IDW Director of ePublishing, Jeff Webber. “Our iPad apps are also compatible with our iPhone® and iPod touch® apps. So you can purchase TRANSFORMERS and G.I. JOE on one device, and read it on another. The apps will automatically identify which one you are using, and adjust to offer the best reading experience.”
Each storefront app offers readers the highest quality viewing experience, with a full-page display that showcases the eye-catching art and vivid stories. IDW has developed several new features to enhance the comics and take full advantage of the iPad’s capabilities, including pinch-zoom abilities and single- or two-page viewing options.
“Both G.I. JOE and TRANSFORMERS stories have such a broad appeal and have been gaining steam with the core readership, that pushing them to the front of the iPad store just made sense,” says Andy Schmidt, IDW Senior Editor on both franchises. “These are not just great apps and a great reading experience, these are great stories with beautiful artwork.”
“The great comic book legacy of TRANSFORMERS and G.I. JOE continues in a new and exciting way with these new cutting edge applications for the iPad and other digital platforms,” said Bryony Bouyer, Senior Vice President of Entertainment and Licensing at Hasbro. “We’re thrilled to be able to deliver classic characters such as OPTIMUS PRIME and SNAKE EYES to comic fans around the world via IDW in a variety of formats.”
IDW was the first comics publisher to launch its own “in app purchase” storefronts for the iPhone and iPod touch with a variety of applications. The company also offers the IDW Comics app, which collects the entire IDW digital catalog, including TRANSFORMERS, G.I. JOE and many other titles. All IDW comic shop apps are powered by iVerse (http://www.iversecomics.com/).

I have recently been introduced to the GI JOE IDW app for iPhone. I downloaded the app and some free comics. It's pretty neat app; it's hard to read the pages when you have your iPhone oriented vertically, but when you turn it horizontally, it shows the comic frame by frame, so it's easier to read. I am seriously considering getting and iPad (for work, of course!), and if so, then I'm sure the comics would look even better on it.
I'm still on the fence, though, about whether I'd rather have electronic media versus actual product. I have started collecting the GI Joe Classics series by IDW. I think cost-wise, since I'm a member of Barnes and Noble, it's cheaper for me to buy one of the graphic novels than it is to buy them individually off of itunes. But it is tempting just to have a whole comic book collection right there at your fingertips.

It would be better if they updated their comics within the IDW application. I have the app and it only gives the first few issues of of each series. I would be all for digital comics (DC or Marvel as well) if they put the comics out on time instead of reading them way past their arrival date. I had the Marvel subscription and was sorely disappointing as they did not have the last 3 or 4 issues of the current comic that came out. You might as well buy trade paperbacks/graphic novels as the wait time is about the same. It is better to stick with the paper comics instead of digital until all of the companies start releasing their stuff on time.

I noticed they seemed to be dragging on the digital releases. I know they've released 10 volumes (100 issues) in the classics series, but they only have the first 10 issues for the classic series available on the IDW app. I don't know about the other conic series, as I haven't begun to follow them yet.
Speaking of which, how much are comics? I have bought the trade paperbacks for the classics series from B&N, and as a member I get them for $13-16 a book. At 10 issues per volume, that's about 1.30-1.60 per issue. I was thinking of starting the "GI JOE" series from IDW, and I can get a volume for about the same price. I don't know how many issues are in each volume. I know that most individual issues on the iPhone app are about $1.99 each. I was just wondering what an individual issue would cost at a comic store, since I don't have a comic store.

$2.99 is the norm in the store.

I'm seriously considering getting an iPad. One of the main reasons is IDW's GI Joe app. It's half the cost of the physical comics nowadays.
What size iPad would you all recommend for someone who would want to get their IDW Joe comics exclusively on the iPad longterm? I mean, since there's no usb ports or anything, it's not like I can save the purchases elsewhere right?

Do they still have them on PSN for the PSP?

Well I hope joe hits the xoom soon. Comixology has IDW books but just the TF series so far. at $1.99 an issue I've caught up on the "Road to Chaos" event without need to stockpile a bunch of TF books I'll never read again.
