Coming to us by way of Bleeding Cool is an unexpected rumor about the future of IDW’s G.I. Joe license.
The site – which was recently correct in reporting IDW’s loss of some Marvel and Star Wars lines earlier this year – now reports that word had broken at SDCC 2021 that IDW will be losing the license of not only Transformers, but also GI Joe too:
“Over the weekend at San Diego Comic-Con 2021: Special Edition, there was plenty to talk about the state of the comic book industry as it stands, as well as the many moves that have been happening of late and will be happening in the very near future. And as big publishers chose not to attend the show, it meant that there was much less management of the information that flowed. One such nugget was the news that IDW Publishing, based just up the road in San Diego, is to lose their licence to produce comic books based on the Transformers franchise from Hasbro.
Back in August, Bleeding Cool broke the news on IDW losing the Marvel Action kids line of titles, which IDW then confirmed, and the Star Wars All-Ages line – which IDW did not reply to, but that Dark Horse Comics claimed last month.
IDW did not respond to inquiries made earlier today, on this, or a number of related stories. If true, there is also no date as to when this may occur but on current form, I would expect in the summer of 2022.”
Again, we stress that this should be taken as a rumor until official word is received. But until then, you can sound off with your thoughts on the boards.

Will marvel want it back? Comic companies are struggling.

Everyone here cool with that? I would have thought that you would want some form of monthly comic for your (or one of many) favorite hobby.

I mean, I loved the early IDW run. The Gage and Costa Cobra Minis? Top shelf. The first twenty or so issues of Dixon’s run. Pretty great. Some of the Special Missions and Origins were cool. The last almost ten years have been atrocious. What a shame, but they definitely don’t deserve the license anymore.
I hope Marvel doesn’t get it. That company is a dumpster fire.

The only reason I am fine with this is because I can never find their comics in stores so I order them directly from IDW and their lowest shipping option is now $7. I was fine with the slow media mail they used to offer because it was like $2.50. Then they dropped that and shipping was $5 and it only recently went up to $7. That just seems silly to me when I am buying one $4 comic at a time.
I just want Larry Hama to be able to finish his run then I hope they can start another long-running reboot. IDW could never keep the other titles running for very long. It was the same with DDP where they would run for maybe 24 issues then reboot again.

If IDW is "losing" the license, that implies someone else is going to pick it up.

Perhaps it is time for a new GI Joe force and enemy....but can that be pulled off. Who knows.
