We finally have a run of 10 pages that could be considered “Cobra Rising”, after we are two-issues deep. The Death of Snake Eyes story is still mixed in issue #217, but we do get a few cool Cobra’s that show up, as well as a take on an old school classic vehicle, even tho it makes no sense why Cobra would be using it? Anyway it’s a small… very small step forward.
G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero #217
Larry Hama (w) • Paolo Villanelli (a & c)
COBRA RISING! Cobra’s latest operation brings the fight to G.I. Joe’s turf…
FC • 32 pages • $3.99
If you decide to read on this review will contain Major Spoilers.
6 pages of Zartan and Storm Shadow
10 pages Cobra Rising (kinda)
4 pages of Death of Snake Eyes
Issue #217 of G.I. Joe A Real American Hero is a mixed bag. You start off with a really well written and cool exchage between Zartan and Storm Shadow that leads into what could be considered a little bit of Cobra Rising. But just when you think IDW is starting to move away from focusing on Fake Eyes, they go and ruin it at the end of the book.
It looks like Destro and the Baroness will be back full time from this issue forward leading into Cobra World Order. Destro and Baroness crash Hawk’s meeting with “top officials around the world” who just got done telling him Cobra is about to start a war. Hawk reply’s yeah we know…. We sent our best team of Joe’s in to send a message and let him go about his plan. (Rolls eyes)….
Next up is the 4-pages of The Death Of Snake Eyes content, that has us walk through the pit – where we have a cry with Fake Eyes and Sneak Peek. Next we take a boat ride with Fake Eyes and Scarlett at the Statue of Liberty and have another cry. The End…..
Cobra World Order: Starting with a special prelude issue (was that not the point of Cobra Rising?) in October that reveals Cobra’s master plan. The series will be a three-month bi-weekly with an 8-part story line that will conclude on February 2016 with a double sized issue #225.

(Plurals and verbs don't get apostrophes). It is a common mistake, but it is a simple fix.

Mr Hama must be up to something with this 'death of Snake eyes'...I mean Sneek Peek is back!?!?!? If he can explain this then Snake Eyes is about as dead as Wolverine!

I like Villanelli fresh work.
I hope the story is good.

I agree ponygt, I think Mr. Hama has a plan, I don't think Snake Eyes is dead, I think his death was so weakly written by Hama because he didn't want to insult our intelligence. We all know IDW wasn't really going to kill off Snake Eyes for good. Maybe I'm reaching but I still want to believe in Hama.

Those intro pages are surprisingly intriguing. Hope the rest of the issue maintains the intrigue.

It's... average; a filler issue. (Man, we have so many of those anymore.) It's divided into 5 different stories: 1. Storm Shadow & Zartan, 2. Fred 172 & 191, 3. Duke & Psyche-Out figuring out Cobra's next move, 4. Hawk vs. Baroness and 5. Scarlett & Fake-Eyes come to terms with some issues in New York.
Some will love it, because of the Arashikage and vague references to DDP's "Storm Shadow" miniseries (which Hama also wrote). Other will hate it, because Fake-Eyes is now mute and wearing a rubber mask and inheriting everything that belonged to Snake-Eyes.
My opinion: at least we're getting it 2x a month for now, though the letters' pages do refer to a double-sized issue at #225 (after the Cobra World Order arc). I'm praying this isn't the "final issue" of the series.

I.D.W., Hama please give us a decent story arc without Lovercraft's alien big eye, the mecha Robotech wannabe, the death of Snake Eyes (or other icons) and other garbage or close it. I do not think this comic is even remunerative for You.

I'm seriously hating the Fake Eyes thing.
Rubbing whose for all intents and purposes the "widow's" nose in the death of her loved one...I know..."Charlie Mike."
The rest of the issue, I liked and look forward to what is happening.
Sad part, don't know if I can get past the first part due to the size of it (How he died, the whole Fake Eyes thing, etc).
Being a baby fan boy...But no more than anyone else still reading the comic you followed as a kid.
Just lost a reason.
