IDW held their SDCC 2019 panel and featured several G.I. Joe titles. The whole panel was 20 minutes long with just 5 minutes of content belonging to the G.I. Joe franchise. Nevertheless, there was a significant amount of info drop during the panel.
It is also worth noting that the Snake Eyes variant covers did not make it to the booth as exclusives, due to a production issue.
Highlights:
- Transformers vs. G.I. Joe
- G.I. Joe 2019
- G.I. Joe: Snake Hunt
- Snake Eyes: Deadgame
You can read a detailed description about each title, after the jump.
Transformers vs. G.I. Joe
- At the near end of the Transformers portion of the panel, the team talked about the SDCC 2019 exclusive, limited edition, hardcover Transformers vs. G.I. Joe.
- The comic book will be signed by Tom Scioli at the SDCC 2019 IDW Booth.
G.I. Joe 2019
- New series by Paul Allor and Chris Evenhuis.
- Will take G.I. Joe in a very different direction.
- Michael Kelly’s message to G.I. Joe fans: “As long as Larry Hama wants to write ‘A Real American Hero’ [series], he can write ‘A Real American Hero’ [series]. *audience cheer*. “Fear not. However, I think that we have a responsibility to these brands to evolve into new stories. To make them exciting, and interesting, and to cater to new audiences as well as to the existing audiences.“
- The new series is inspired by some events from World War II. Winston Churchill recruited civilians to go behind enemy lines and sabotage.
- Incredible ability to carry on against all odds. That is the story that is told here.
- Couple of pages shown on screen. Cobra “police” and an incident at a convenience store.
G.I. Joe: Snake Hunt
- By Larry Hama.
- Very ambitious project.
- It will feature every living G.I. Joe.
- Got two Snake Eyes running around including Dawn.
- Another member of the G.I. Joe is taking the mantle of Snake Eyes to make Cobra think that [original] Snake Eyes is still around.
- Cobra is aware of this and is hunting who they think is the original Snake Eyes. They are sending a full force to hunt down SE and G.I. Joe must send a team equal to the Cobra force. Which includes quite a lot of them.
Snake Eyes: Deadgame
- Coming Soon.
- [Yes, folks… that’s all they said.]

2 out of 3 of the upcoming projects sound outstanding. Mom and Pop Shop Joe will quietly be cancelled after a few issues I fear. I hope I am wrong, but as the sage once said, 2 out of 3 ain't bad!

Still hoping to see my favorite twins in ARAH....

I gotta say I don't like the premise of the new GI Joe book, but will keep an open mind. IDWverse Joe series from 2009-2016 started well...and fizzled over the years. Lots of good stuff, and lots of wasted potential. ARAH is still going strong, and I am excited for Snake Hunt.

Could Dead Game be about the return of Snake Eyes?

"Joes dressed as civilians working at a mom and pop shop."
This is not accurate, just an fyi.

Normally I wouldn't have bothered to say anything, but I saw that folks were calling the book "Mom and Pop Joe," and effff that, haha.

He doesn't read or watch it. It has nothing to do with his Joe universe. Many creators don't read fanfic, or watch the shows based on, or similar to, their work. This is because they don't want it inadvertently leeching in, and they need to avoid litigious people.
I imagine, also, that it's somewhat disconcerting to see characters based on people you know doing things in ways they didn't. There's a reason Larry Hama isn't comfortable with Scarlett paired up with anyone but Snake Eyes.
Search around, and you'll find the post where Larry Hama is standing with Larry Houston and noting that the Silent Castle design was inspired by seeing Houston's art for Destro's castle from the first cartoon mini series.
Larry and Larry hadn't seen each other in decades, and were tickled to meet again.
"Larry Houston designed the "Cobra Castle" for the animated show- I adapted it as the "Silent Castle" for ARAH #21. I hadn't seen him since the '80s, when he was the "new kid" at the studio."
From March 27, 2018
This is generally the attitude of most creators meeting.
So, remember, it isn't that they are stuck up or nasty, it's that they are keeping away from potential "contamination", if you will.
