Creators Saddened Over The Fate Of G. I. Joe: Renegades

Posted on October 16, 2011 at 2:11 pm by Silver Optimus under G.I. Joe Renegades

G. I. Joe: Renegades was an extremely creative take on the franchise we know and love. Going beyond the usual theme, Renegades established a unique universe of its own… much like Transformers: Prime.

And this is exactly why the Creative Team of Transformers: Prime is saddened over the fate of G. I. Joe: Renegades.

At today’s New York Comic Con 2011 Transformers: Prime Panel, Jeff Kline who is the executive producer of both shows told everyone that the creators are always afraid of cancellation. They never expected this to happen to Renegades when they thought they were doing great things with the show.

On a happy note, they did use the word “Hiatus” at the panel.

IGN has the coverage of the panel. [Read more…]

Discussion Point – Sigma 6 Renegades?

Posted on August 2, 2011 at 2:07 pm by Shin Densetsu under G.I. Joe Renegades

Let’s face it, the GI Joe fandom usually seems like it’s most vocal about whatever is new. While Sigma 6 isn’t usually the topic of discussion now-a-days, it would be a lie to say that many of us here did not partake in collecting the unique, 8″ GI Joe figures. For a hot minute(actually a few years), Sigma 6 was pretty big here at the ‘Tank.

Since 2008, in lieu of utilizing the Sigma 6 format, Hasbro decided to instead re-release 12″ GI Joe figures. They have returned once again for the GI Joe 30th Anniversary. The common complaints, even dating back to the GI Joe 25th Anniversary and even further, were:

  • Constant use of a dated figure body(basic articulation, no double jointed elbows/knees from the 25th 12″ figures through ROC, to now, aside from the JoeCon Crimson Guard Paratrooper). For some reason the “super articulated” body has rarely been used.
  • Not as much cloth clothing
The announcement at Toy Fair 2011 that the 12″ figures would be making a return, left a lot of fans scratching their heads.

Some of us began to wonder, why not use the Sigma 6 format instead? The figures are:

  • More affordable
  • Have clothes
  • Include weapons lockers
  • Have modular weapons/accessories
  • Are very sturdy/durable
For a figures with real “clothes”, Sigma 6 can arguably be seen as a better bargain. Not to mention, the 5th anniversary of Sigma 6 went without any celebration on Hasbro’s part.

Which brings us to Renegades. Renegades designs have animated styling. Sigma 6 featured a style that was highly styalized, not so much anime, but more along the lines of designer vinyl toys. Imagine, Sigma 6 figures with new parts and cloth uniforms to replicate the Renegades designs. Want a big Roadblock figure? Easy, use the buck for Heavy Duty or Grunt!

As part of the 30th anniversary celebration, would you rather have Sigma 6 Renegades figures, or the current 12″ figures by Hasbro? [Read more…]

Goodbye GI Joe Renegades

Posted on July 25, 2011 at 10:25 am by Shin Densetsu under G.I. Joe Renegades

Hasbro/The Hub bid farewell to GI Joe Renegades with a “weird dream” clip featuring Michael Bell, only shown at the end of the 1st showing of GI Joe Renegades Episode 26 Revelations Part 2. Did your DVR cut off before this clip was shown, or did you miss it completely? No worries, thanks to snakeeyesv2 you can watch the clip in question, below!

GI Joe Renegades had much promise, as it had been hyped as a GI Joe animated series which would feature emphasis on storytelling and characterization. Initially it was planned to have multiple seasons. In a way, it was to GI Joe what War For Cybertron was to Transformers. Do you think Hasbro/The Hub did a good job ending Renegades on a good note? Further more, do you think it deserved more time to flesh out both the story and characters? Did it end too soon, or just right? [Read more…]

And Now For Some Bad News – The Hub in Trouble?

Posted on June 15, 2011 at 3:06 pm by DESTRO under G.I. Joe Renegades

Hasbro and Discovery Communication’s parternship network, The Hub, might be in trouble.

According to reports from Deadline.com and the Hollywood Reporter, Discovery Communications (the other half of The Hub) has ammended their agreement with Hasbro Inc. regarding the fees for airing animated programs. The ammendment is based around a “trigger event”, which could lead to a writedown of the channel’s overall worth. Discovery Communications submitted a $500 million dollar debt filing to the SEC Monday morning.

The Hub is currently averaging around 23,000 viewers, down from 24,000 a mere month ago. These ratings pale in comparison to the other children’s network giants Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network. It is important to note that no new network has ever shot up the charts and they all had growing pains in the beginning. The fear is that Discovery Communications and Hasbro are trying to do so in a failing economy and, for most United States customers, to even watch The Hub you have to pay a premium cable package which raises your cable rates upwards of $100 a month, which for most people, isn’t worth it when you can just watch it online the next day thanks to the power of the Internet.

It is speculated that with the $500 million dollar debt filing, Discovery Communications will begin repurchasing its own stock while under the new ammended agreement, Hasbro will foot more of the bill to air their own programs such as My Little Ponies: Friendship is Magic and Transformers Prime.

What does this all mean exactly? In short, by Q3 (Third Quarter in Business Lingo) it may come to be that The Hub is not worth what everyone thought it was in a financial sense. Depending on what that overall amount is, it could cause one or both partners to pull out of the agreement, and The Hub will fade away in to the midsts of obscurity. That is worst-case-scenario however, but it’s important to note that it is a viable possibility.

What can you do? Figure out a way to get The Hub with your cable package. Convince people you know with children how great The Hub is with their family-oriented programming. Instead of watching CSI while the kids play video games, gather the family around to watch your favorite family programs from the 1980’s and 1990’s. And, of course, watch Transformers Prime!

We’ll keep you updated. A special thanks to The Live Action Transformers Movie Blog for the initial heads up on this story. [Read more…]
